Reinvent Wheel? Blue Room. Defusing a Bomb? Red Room.

The color red can make people’s work more accurate, but blue can make people more creative, a study suggests.

I think that color in lighting design is becoming increasingly important in today’s built environment. We’ve gone almost as far as we can designing simple lighting fixtures that change the way the light is dispersed or the shade or covering on the fixture. Color psychology is an untapped resource for the lighting designer. If one can change the mood of a room simply by dimming the lights, why not add a hint of blue (as the article suggests) to create a more creative feeling? This is done in upscale nightclubs and restaurants, but I think that “colored lighting” could be incorporated into residential and commercial areas as well. LEDs are taking the market by storm, mostly in the sustainability department. The thing that I like most about LEDs is the pure color that they give off. An LED flashlight is nice because it shines a pure white light. A colored LED gives off light just as pure. Theatrical and special effects lighting have really run with this idea. I worked at a job site (the Cobb Energy Performing Arts center) with a company I was interning with a few years back, and the highlight of the house lighting were the ambient red LEDs that lit up the clouds on the ceiling. Colors add a whole new dimension to an environment, whether it be through mood or simple decoration. I know that it would be impractical to have red mood lights all over your house, but if we were able to tone down the color of an LED just enough so that it would maintain the same intensity, then I think we would have a winner. Lighting products could take on entirely new forms and have a purpose other than enabling people to see.

I’m truly enjoying the design and layout of your blog. It’s a very easy on the eyes which makes it much more enjoyable for me to come here and visit more often. Did you hire out a designer to create your theme? Fantastic work!
